GRI 14: Sector Standard for Mining

GRI Mining

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has announced the release of the GRI 14: Mining Sector Standard. The Standard is the fourth published Sector Standard following the release of the Oil and Gas, Coal, and Agriculture and Aquaculture Fishing sectors.

Mining and minerals have a pivotal role in shaping modern societies. While essential in addressing some of humanity’s greatest challenges, the demand for minerals needs to be met with responsible practices that protect the environment, uphold human rights, and safeguard local communities. The new GRI Sector Standard for Mining is a major step forward, ensuring increased accountability through meaningful reporting. It responds to the growing transparency expectations of stakeholders and provides robust metrics to uncover the impacts mining has on the environment, communities, and workers.” - Global Reporting Initiative

The standard aims to:

  • Address the need for consistent, granular, and complete reporting on the mining sector’s impacts and contributions to sustainable development,

  • Create a common set of metrics for mining companies to report their impacts, and

  • Provide a baseline for transparency from stakeholders in the sector on a diversity of issues based on the following 4 key drivers: demand, impact, benefit, and expectation.

The GRI 14: Mining Sector Standard addresses 25 potentially material topics, covering key issues such as emissions, waste, human rights, local communities, and many more. The standard aims to apply to all organisations in the sector, including exploration, extraction, processing, and other related support services.

This standard enters into effect for reporting in 2026, while early adoption is encouraged.
